Preparing to Leave Thailand by Motorcycle – Border Requirements & Checklist

Before riding out of Thailand and crossing into neighboring countries like Laos or China , it’s essential to have all documents and requirements in order. Proper preparation ensures a smooth border crossing and avoids unnecessary delays especially on international motorcycle tours.

Passport and Visa: Your passport should be valid for 6+ months. Check visa requirements for your destination. Laos: visa on arrival, single-entry (~$30–50) varying by nationality. China tourist visa (L visa): requires advance application at a Chinese embassy/consulate, get an invitation letter via agency for motorcycle entry.
Motorcycle Registration: Bring the original registration certificate of your motorcycle. Customs will want to see it to confirm the motorcycle belongs to you.
Driver’s License & IDP: Bring your home driving license. An International Driving Permit (IDP) avoids most complications.
Thai Customs Paperwork: Thailand requires a Temporary Export Document (sometimes called Simplified Customs Declaration Form) for motorcycle border crossings at all official checkpoints—standardized nationwide for legal bike export on Thailand-Laos, Thailand-Cambodia, Thailand-Myanmar, and Thailand-Malaysia routes.

Crossing into Laos: Updated 2026 Motorcycle Guide

After Thai customs and immigration, head straight to Lao immigration, complete the Lao arrival form (Digital Immigration Form (LDIF) online 3 days prior via official site for QR code).

Present your passport, visa (on arrival ~$30–50), original bike registration, and Thailand export document (from above).
Officials will record your motorcycle’s chassis and plate number, matching it against your Thai export paper and registration.
Customs will inspect the motorcycle and issue a temporary import permit, typically valid for the same duration as your entry visa (15–30 days).
Temporary insurance for the bike is compulsory for all foreign vehicles; you can often purchase it at the border. Typical cost is ~60,000–70,000 LAK ≈ $6–7 USD for ~10 days.

Scenarios Riders Face

If you arrive after 4 pm, the customs office may be closed, forcing an overnight stay in near by border towns (Chiang Khong or Huay Xai etc.)
If you don’t have multiple photocopies of your documents, you’ll pay ~10 THB per copy at some shops near the checkpoint.
Border crossings are generally straightforward, but delays can happen depending on traffic flow. For example, if you arrive behind freight trucks or regional cargo convoys, processing times at customs may increase.

Visa: L tourist visa: You must secure a Chinese tourist visa in advance, travel agencies usually handle the invitation letter and permits, but in theory you can apply yourself. Be warned, it’s complicated and rarely approved without agency help.
Bike registration
The Lao export/import documents.
Temporary import permit: Foreign motorcycles cannot obtain a permit on arrival. You must arrange an official Chinese travel agency to secure permits, a licensed guide, and temporary Chinese plates/insurance before attempting the border.
Insurance: Chinese temporary insurance is mandatory, and your guide/agency will usually handle this paperwork in advance.

From the deserts of Central Asia to the mountains of the Balkans, the second part of Bike Tour Asia’s grand expedition continues. After 58 days on the road, Daniel, Por and our amazing riders entered the Caucasus region where Europe and Asia meet and pressed onward to the motorcycle mecca of Germany.

In this installment, we highlight the thrilling roads, cultural encounters, and unforgettable moments from days 59 to 83 of this once-in-a-lifetime journey.

Azerbaijan Motorcycle Ride: Caspian Coast to Sheki’s Mountains (Days 59–61)

We arrived in Baku, Azerbaijan after a ferry crossing from Aktau, Kazakhstan. The city’s skyline is defined by modern marvels like the Flame Towers, set against ancient landmarks such as the Maiden Tower and old city walls. The contrast made for a thrilling return to urban life after the quiet deserts.

From Baku, the route wound northwest to Sheki. It’s a lush, cool mountain town steeped in Silk Road history. Staying in a converted caravanserai, we explored traditional mosques and marketplaces, feeling the echoes of traders who passed this way centuries ago.

Riding Through Georgia: Wine Country to the Caucasus Peaks (Days 62–66)

Crossing into Georgia, we made our way into the heart of Kakheti wine country. In Telavi, we stayed at a family-run vineyard and tasted qvevri-aged wines. It’s a local tradition dating back thousands of years.

Tbilisi, Georgia’s vibrant capital, offered a blend of old-world charm and new energy. We explored sulfur baths, cobblestone lanes, and a dynamic food scene. From there, we ascended the legendary Georgian Military Highway toward Kazbegi. The ride offered jaw-dropping views of the Caucasus Mountains, culminating at the hilltop Gergeti Trinity Church.

Our descent brought us to Batumi on the Black Sea. The city’s beach vibes and playful architecture provided the perfect contrast before entering Turkey.

Epic Turkey Motorcycle Routes: Dark Canyon to Cappadocia (Days 67–70)

From Batumi, we crossed into Turkey and rode through scenic valleys to Bayburt. Turkish hospitality welcomed us with strong tea, heartfelt smiles, and hearty meals.

The highlight was riding through Karanlık Kanyon (Dark Canyon) from Bayburt to Kemaliye. The hand-carved Taş Yolu (Stone Road) tested our skills with narrow cliffside tunnels and unforgettable views of the Euphrates River.

In peaceful Kemaliye, we paused to appreciate how far we’d come. Then it was on to Cappadocia, a surreal landscape of fairy chimneys and ancient cave dwellings. We cruised through its Martian-like terrain before continuing to Sapanca and Sakarya’s lush, forested lake region.

Plovdiv to Belgrade: First Steps into Europe (Days 71–72)

Crossing into Bulgaria, we arrived in Plovdiv, a gem of Europe with layers of Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman history. Wandering through the Old Town and discovering Roman amphitheaters and vibrant street art made for a fascinating day.

The next leg brought us to Belgrade, Serbia. Here, the Danube meets the Sava, and the mix of Ottoman relics and brutalist modernism creates a city unlike any other. We enjoyed riverside dinners and immersed ourselves in Serbia’s rich cultural energy.

Slovenia to Germany: Finishing with BMW Motorrad Days (Day 73 & Days 80–83)

Slovenia's smooth alpine roads and quiet medieval towns made for a motorcyclist’s dream. We carved our way through the countryside, savoring every turn as we approached the final leg.

In Germany, the journey concluded at the BMW Motorrad Days in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, beneath the towering Zugspitze. It was more than just a festival, it was a celebration of everything we’d experienced: 83 days, thousands of kilometers, and a journey that spanned cultures, climates, and continents.

This part of the world has some of the most exciting, scenic, and rewarding motorcycle routes you’ll ever ride. From the winding roads around Chiang Mai to jungle tracks in Cambodia and the legendary Ho Chi Minh Trail, the experience is unforgettable.

But great trips don’t just happen. Good planning, smart packing, and pacing yourself properly can turn a tough ride into the ride of a lifetime.

How to Plan a Long-Distance Motorcycle Tour in Southeast Asia

Southeast Asia can surprise you. A smooth highway can turn into a potholed backroad. Fuel stops can be rare in the countryside. And crossing borders takes time and patience.

Planning a long-distance ride in Southeast Asia isn’t just about the route but it’s about adapting to unpredictable roads, border delays, and long stretches with no gas station stops. Good planning helps you avoid stress, ride longer, and actually enjoy the journey.

Here’s how to approach it:

Step 1: Build Your Route

Start with your must-see destinations (e.g., Baan Rak Thai in Mae Hong son, the Ho Chi Minh Trail, or Angorwat), then work backward to plan manageable daily distances. Mix in known roads with a few scenic detours if you’re confident in navigation.

Step 2: Set a Realistic Daily Range

Aim for 200 to 350 km per day. Any more and it becomes a slog, especially on mountain roads or in the wet season.

Step 3: Check the gas station stops

Rural areas often have no proper gas stations, sometimes they have only just roadside bottles. These can work in a pinch but may be low-quality fuel. So I recommend you to check Google maps and pin it in your private folder of the gas station in each country before you go and on that day of the trip. Download those areas offline before heading into rural zones. (you can check more reliable apps in the next steps)

Refill when you're at half a tank, especially in Laos, Cambodia, and remote Thailand. Or bring a small light portable tank with you, it’s also a smart move.

Step 4: Check the Border Rules Ahead of Time

Border crossings can be smooth or take hours. Each country has different แustoms rules for bikes (some require a temporary import permit), Visa-on-arrival or eVisa options, and Insurance requirements. Use local rider forums or facebook groups or ask tour operators for up-to-date border advice. Bring extra passport photos. You can even contact us to ask, we are happy to help.

Step 5: Pre-Book Remote Nights

Always book ahead in smaller towns. Even one fully booked guesthouse can throw off your day. But you can keep it empty, when you think of a rest day, you might want to extend the small leg to some tiny village that you found on the road.

Step 6: Use the Right Tools

Install offline GPS apps like OsmAnd , Gaia GPS, or Rever. Save your routes in advance because the mobile signals drop often in rural areas. If you don’t want to use these applications, you can download the offline map on Google map in the specific area, this solution you need to download one area at the time.

Step 7: Build in Recovery

Every few riding days, take a full rest day. This helps your body recover and gives you time to explore off-bike. Check Google Maps for saunas, ice baths, or massage spots. It’s great for recovery.

Lessons from the Land of Lanna, on Two Wheels. Some trips are vacations. Some are escapes. And some like the Amazing Land of Lanna motorcycle tour feel like something in between.

You ride to get away, sure. But somewhere on those winding mountain roads, you also ride to come back to yourself.

This is not a blog about specs and schedules. It is about what it feels like to ride through Northern Thailand. And what you carry home long after the tour ends.

Lesson 1: The most beautiful roads are often the quietest

Leaving Chiang Mai was exciting. It doesn’t take long for the buildings to give way to green, past Mae Rim, the road begins to climb, and everything starts to quiet down. Around Pong Yaeng, the air shifts. Pine trees line the ridges, fog rolls low, and the curves gently wake up your riding instincts.

Some days, we barely saw another vehicle. Especially during the rainy season, when most people stay off the roads but honestly, that’s when it’s at its best. Everything is greener, softer, quieter. The forest feels alive. There’s fresh northern mushrooms in roadside markets, steaming soil, and the scent of rain still hanging in the air.

No tour buses. No traffic jams. Just us and the road, curving through mist, into silence, and whatever came next.

Every day brought something new: jungle-covered hills beyond Samoeng, river valleys near Mae Sapok, and ridgeline viewpoints that made you want to stop every ten minutes, just to take it all in.

Lesson 2: You do not need to go remote to feel far away

We didn’t bushwhack through jungles or camp under tarps. The roads were paved, the hotels were warm, the beds soft. But every day still felt like a slow drift into another world.

In Mae Sariang, we woke to the sound of the Yuam River outside the window. A few days later, in Mae Chaem, we stayed at a quiet resort surrounded by rice fields and low hills, the kind of place where the night is so still you can hear crickets ticking like a clock.

We were never far from comfort but somehow we always felt far from everything else.

Even the roads felt handpicked. The long stretch from Khun Yuam toward Doi Inthanon was smooth and open, bordered by forests that swallowed phone signals and thoughts alike. One afternoon, we stopped at a teakwood house where an old woman served us lemongrass tea in silence, like she did it every day for someone who needed it.

It was the kind of riding where you don’t need to go deep into the wilderness to feel like you’ve left something behind. The stillness finds you anyway.

Lesson 3: There is more to riding than the ride

Let’s be honest! Everyone comes for the curves. And the stretch between Pai and Mae Hong Son doesn’t disappoint. The famous 1,864 turns aren’t just a number; they’re a full-body rhythm. You lean into them, one after another, and the outside world fades away.

But what surprised me were the quiet moments in between.

A roadside coffee shack near Pang Mapha, where the owner’s kid brought out banana chips for a compliment. A rest stop outside Ban Rak Thai, where smoky tea was served with no rush, no small talk, just the sound of wind through pine trees.

One afternoon we pulled over and it’s not because we had to, but because the view cracked something open in us. Nobody said anything. We just stood there, letting the silence settle in.

By dinner, we’d be laughing about the day that someone overshot a hairpin, someone else got chased by a chicken but it always came back to the ride. Not just the road beneath us, but the way it somehow kept showing us exactly what we needed.

Lesson 4: Culture is better experienced, not explained

You can read about Lanna history. About temples, hill tribes, tea routes, and old trade towns. But on the road, it reaches you differently, quietly, without warning.

In Mae Salong, we heard Mandarin before Thai. A group of kids laughing outside a tea shop, the echo of the Kuomintang long after the headlines faded. Later that day, we drank oolong with a woman who’d lived there since the '70s. She didn't talk much. Just poured and smiled.

In a Karen village near Mae Chaem, we passed a group of kids flying plastic-bag kites, barefoot and shrieking with joy. No one tried to sell us anything. No one staged a show.

One day, I wandered off near a hillside temple and stumbled into a monk’s lunch ceremony. I paused, unsure. A monk looked up, caught my eye, and nodded toward an empty bench. That was it. No words. Just presence.

This wasn’t sightseeing. It was something quieter. You don’t “visit” culture on a ride like this. You move through it, and if you’re lucky, it lets you in.

Lesson 5: Riding clears your mind in ways

There’s something about mountain roads that pulls your focus. Maybe it’s the way the corners come one after another, or how the light changes constantly, mist in the morning, gold by late afternoon.

On the stretch between Mae Sariang and Mae Chaem, the road climbs and falls through quiet hills. For nearly an hour, I didn’t say a word. Didn’t think about work or what was next. Just leaned into the curves, breath steady, engine humming like a metronome.

Somewhere near Pang Ung, a wall of fog rolled in so suddenly it felt like a dream. I slowed down, couldn’t see more than a few meters ahead, and just kept riding. Trusting the road. Trusting myself. Twenty minutes later, the sun broke through like nothing had happened.

There were no notifications, no deadlines, no noise. Just me, the bike, and the road curling forward. And in that stillness, I remembered what it feels like to be completely present.

What I Took Home (Besides Photos)

When people ask me about this trip, I tell them it’s not about how far we rode, it’s about how fully we rode. Every day brought a new story. Every road a new perspective.

58 Days on the Road: What the “ Ride of a Lifetime ” Feels Like So Far

As of June 12, 2025, me and my friends on the Ride of a Lifetime motorcycle expedition have completed 58 days on the road, starting from April 16. We have travelled thousands of kilometers across Southeast Asia, the Himalayas, and Central Asia.

This 90-day journey from Thailand to Germany is more than 18,000 km, following ancient Silk Road trade routes and modern mountain passes alike.

Route Recap: 58 Days from Chiang Mai to the Heart of Central Asia (April 16 – June 12)

So far, the ride has passed through:

Asia

Thailand & Laos

Day 1–3 (~1,000 km)

Started from Chiang Mai, Bike Tour Asia Service Centre. Its familiar curves to the misty roads of northern Laos, the early stretch eased us in. Roads ranged from smooth Thai tarmac to remote village paths and winding through sleepy villages and green mountains . in Laos. It was humid, green, and full of early morning fog.

China & Tibet

Day 4–28 (~7,000 km)

This was the literal high point. Cold air, thin oxygen, and a deep sense of stillness marked this stretch. Roads climbed above 4,000 m almost daily, peaking at Gyatso La, where the wind bites and every breath feels earned. Around Lhasa and Everest Base Camp (~5,200 m), the landscape opened into something vast and holy…snow peaks, prayer flags, and light that hits different. Fuel was limited. Nights dropped below freezing. But even on the worst gravel, the altitude made everything feel sharper.

“Por noted that the Pamir Highway’s gravel slowed us by 30–40%,” and it was similar here. The speed gives way to focus.

Riders needed crash bars, heated grips, and layered gear to make it through.

Central Asia

Kyrgyzstan – Day 30–36

Wide skies, wide roads. Kyrgyzstan opened into alpine passes and silent grassland camps. This stretch wasn’t technical, but it asked for awareness. Gravel tracks twisted through river valleys, sometimes disappearing altogether. We crossed streams, threaded rocky trails, and camped near turquoise lakes with no signal, no sound, just wind.

The weather swung fast from hot afternoons to cold nights. Having waterproof layers and soft luggage made the difference. Navigation here wasn’t always obvious, but the ride was steady and meditative. The pace felt generous, letting the landscape sink in.

Tajikistan – Day 37–46

Tajikistan hit hard. The Pamir Highway was beautiful in a brutal way. Every kilometer was earned. We climbed Ak-Baital Pass (~4,655 m) and spent hours negotiating cracked roads, steep switchbacks, and blown-out riverbeds. Windstorms came without warning. Fuel was precious. One mistake meant hours of delay or worse.

It was the most physically demanding section so far. Altitude fatigue set in. Clutch fingers cramped. But the silence, the scale, and the sheer remoteness were unmatched. The gear you forget in other countries becomes survival here with extra fuel, spare tubes, tire patch kits, and patience.

Uzbekistan – Day 47–50

After weeks of gravel and high passes, Uzbekistan felt surreal. Smooth highways cut through desert plains, leading to cities carved in blue tile like in Samarkand, Bukhara, Khiva. The riding was faster here, but the heat hit hard. Over 40°C in the saddle meant staying hydrated and ditching heavy gear.

Turkmenistan/Kazakhstan – Day 51–58

The cultural weight of this place is immediate. You ride past minarets that have stood for centuries, through markets that smell of cumin and dust. It’s not just a relief, it’s a reward. Watch the videos.

This kind of trip is not about checking off countries. It is about learning how much the road gives and takes.

High Altitude: Tibet & the Pamirs

We, riders faced cold nights above 4,000 meters, mild altitude sickness, and slow-going gravel roads. But we also rode past prayer flags, glaciers, and landscapes that felt almost Martian.

Culture Shift: From Central Asia to Europe

In a matter of days, the food, language, and traffic rules change dramatically. You go from yurt camps to espresso cafes yet the rhythm of daily riding keeps you grounded.

Your journey kicks off by heading northeast on Route 118, leaving Chiang Mai’s bustle behind as you carve through mountain foothills. You can stop for a scenic lakeside lunch in Phayao before continuing east via Routes 120 and 1021. The road becomes increasingly curvy and remote as you approach Nan, with panoramic mountain views and quiet farming villages along the way. Dinner by the Nan River wraps up your first full day on the road.

Tips:

Hidden viewpoint on Route 118: Shortly past the Mae Takhrai National Park entrance, look for rest areas beside the Mae Kuang River. It’s great for early-morning fishing or coffee stops.

Day 2: Nan to Bo Kluea and back

Distance: ~210 km (Nan → Route 1081 → Bo Kluea → Route 1256 → back)

Today is a loop ride through some of Thailand’s best mountain roads. You head east from Nan on Route 1081 toward the remote village of Bo Kluea, known for its traditional salt wells. These are naturally occurring brine springs formed in Permian-era rock layers, over 800 years old, drawing water enriched by underground salt domes. Villagers scoop the brine into large pans, boil it for 4–5 hours over bamboo fires, then crystallize and dry the salt to create coarse mountain salt that’s mineral-rich and non-iodized. Here you can explore the village and learn how the salt is made. If possible, go early between 6 AM and 10 AM when the air is cooler and you can watch the salt-making process in a calm, quiet setting.

Then return to Nan via the elevated and winding Route 1256, which passes through Phu National Park. End the day with a stop at Wat Phumin, famous for its murals. The most iconic is "The Whispering Lovers," or "Pu Man, Ya Man," showing a man leaning in to whisper into a woman's ear. It's one of the most recognized pieces of temple art in Thailand.

Tips:

Offbeat attraction: Along Route 1256 through Phu National Park, take the “Sky Road” detour to a 1,715 m viewpoint with sweeping mountain views.

Waterfall stop: Silaphet Waterfall is a multi-tiered cascade hidden in the forest. It’s at its most beautiful between the rainy season and early winter.

Day 3: Nan to Chiang Rai

Distance: ~250 km (Routes 101 → 1148 → 1020 → Route 1 into Chiang Rai)

Ride time: ~4–5 hrs

Elevation gain: ~1,200 m

Road surface: Paved, smooth sweeping curves (R1148 is world-class)

Fuel stops: 1 mid-route at highway junctions, plus Chiang Rai

Depart Nan via Route 101 and turn onto the renowned Route 1148, a hidden gem favored by riders for its endless sweepers and ridge-line views. Continue onto Route 1020 through lush countryside and farmlands, then roll into Chiang Rai via Route 1. Stop at the jaw-dropping Wat Rong Khun (White Temple), a surreal, all-white structure that blends art, spirituality, and storytelling. This temple was built by Chalermchai, one of Thailand’s most famous artists. The design is full of symbolism, and if you ask a guide or talk to locals around the temple, they’ll tell you each detail has meaning. If time allows, check out the Blue Temple and the Black House as well. The Black House was created by another iconic Thai artist, Thawan Duchanee. His work explores the idea of life after death, and it’s a very cool experience to walk through.

End the day by exploring the night market and staying overnight in Chiang Rai. For dinner, try Chiang Rai’s local dish, Kanom Jeen Nam Ngiao. It’s a tomato and pork blood-based noodle soup. It tastes way better than it sounds. Trust me.

Tips:

Hidden temple: Wat Ming Muang in Nan Old Town is known for its peaceful atmosphere and quiet murals. The same dress and behavior etiquette applies as at Wat Phumin.

Day 4: Chiang Rai to Thaton

Distance: ~220 km

Ride time: ~4–5 hrs

Elevation gain: ~800 m

Road surface: Paved major roads, smooth yet curvy

Fuel stops: Chiang Rai start + Thaton arrival

Ride north to the Golden Triangle on Route 1290, where Thailand, Laos, and Myanmar converge. Enjoy a boat trip on the Mekong River and a short visit to Laos (passport required). Back on your bike, continue west on Route 1 and climb into Doi Mae Salong via Route 1149, a former Kuomintang Chinese settlement known for tea plantations and Yunnanese heritage. The final stretch follows Route 1089 down into the tranquil river town of Thaton.

Tips:

When sampling tea, ask for rose–Pu’er blends served lakeside. It’s less touristy than the main shops.

Rose–Pu’er is a smooth, earthy Chinese tea blend infused with fragrant rose petals. It’s popular in northern Thailand’s Yunnanese villages like Ban Rak Thai and Doi Mae Salong. If you miss it here, you can still try it in Pai or Mae Hong Son.

Day 5: Thaton to Pai

Distance: ~240 km (1089 → Hua Luk → Route 1095 to Pai)

Ride time: ~5 hrs

Elevation gain: ~1,500 m

Road surface: Excellent twisties, Chinese camp dirt access

Fuel stops: Thaton, Hua Luk, then Pai

Begin the day with a visit to Wat Thaton, a hilltop temple with a 9-tiered pagoda offering stunning panoramic views of the Kok River valley and misty mountain ranges. It’s especially beautiful at sunrise, with soft light and a peaceful atmosphere. Then head south along Route 1089 through rolling farmland and the Hua Luk Royal Project. After lunch near Mae Tang, turn west onto the famously twisty Route 1095. This is where the Mae Hong Son Loop truly begins, with exactly 762 curves between here and Pai.

Before arriving in Pai, make a stop at Thom’s Pai Elephant Camp. This is not just any elephant camp. It’s home to rescued elephants, including Tutdao and Ot, where riding is not allowed. Instead, visitors can walk, feed, bathe, and connect with the elephants in a calm, respectful setting. The camp is often praised as ethical and family-like.

Once in Pai, take time to relax. You’ll find a lively night market, plenty of cafes, and restaurants with both local and international food. For those looking to unwind, try the herbal steam room in Russian style at Good Life Dasha. You can also check out the Finnish-style sauna at Pai Lamun Valley or soak in the hot mineral pools at Tha Pai Hot Spring.

Tips:

Offbeat trail: Near Hua Luk Royal Project, there’s a short dirt track that leads to local strawberry farms. It’s a great spot to refresh and support local growers.

Chinese village: Just outside of Pai, visit the small Yunnanese village where you can try traditional Chinese-Yunnan food and sip Rose–Pu’er tea. Go early to Yun Lai Viewpoint for a chance to see the morning sea of clouds.

Nature stops: For quick side trips, check out Pambok Waterfall, Mae Yen Waterfall, the White Buddha viewpoint, or Pai Canyon for sunset.

Day 6: Pai to Mae Hong Son

The final leg begins on Route 108 through Khun Yuam, where you’ll visit the WWII Japanese museum. From there, wind your way over Route 1263 and 1192 to the summit of Doi Inthanon—Thailand’s highest mountain at 2,565 meters. After a refreshing stop at Wachiratharn Waterfall, descend through Doi Inthanon National Park and complete the journey with a golden-hour return to Chiang Mai via the Sameong Loop.

Tips:

WWII museum hidden trove: At the Khun Yuam Japanese Cemetery and small museum on Route 108, you’ll find rarely seen stories of Japanese soldiers and WWII refugees in northern Thailand.

Waterfall tip: Wachiratharn Falls is most powerful from July to October, right after the monsoon rains. During dry months, it slows to a light flow. Still, it’s one of my favorites—it’s huge and dramatic when flowing.

Hidden temple detour: On the Sameong Loop, take a short access trail to Wat Ton Kwen in Hang Dong. It’s a peaceful spot with classic Lanna architecture and very few tourists.

More ideas nearby: Wat Phra That Doi Kham is also worth a visit for its hilltop views, and Chiang Mai Night Safari in Hang Dong is an easy end-of-day stop if you still have energy.

Tips for Riding in Northern Thailand

Best Season:

November–March (cooler weather, dry, moderate 22–28°C, perfect for riding). But the Green season (June - October) is also good for safe riding too. You will see Thailand at its greenest and enjoy fewer tourists and low-season prices. If you plan to visit during the rainy season, make sure to check the weather forecast in advance.

Gear Tips:

For all the routes, a dual-sport or adventure bike like the BMW GS, Honda CB500X, or TRIUMPH will handle both smooth roads and rough terrain but lots of people also do it with the scooters too. Don’t forget your riding boots, helmet, and rain gear, as the weather can change fast. Layer up for those chilly mornings and evenings, and keep sun protection handy for the ride. For the longer routes, it’s a good idea to carry extra fuel, food, and water since some remote areas are more isolated.

Respect Culture:

Scouting Motorcycle Ride - Laos and Cambodia

Uncovering more great roads and places to share on tour !

During my 25 years in South East Asia I have always enjoyed riding through Laos and the South East regions of Cambodia. Over this time I have done bits and pieces of both countries. This scouting ride was planned to cover the “white spots” and create some new and exciting tour routes.

Setting off with some old and new riding buddies, our first stop was Nong Khiaw in Northern Laos, an easy ride from our base at Chiang Mai, Thailand. Nong Khiaw was where we met up with our Laotian tour guide, Yai, and then continued east to Ban That Hium. This road was beaten up, dusty, full of potholes and overloaded Chinese trucks not stopping for anything, especially motorcyclists!

We were heading to Vieng Xai, a town in the north eastern corner of Lao. During the Vietnam War the Lao communist government used caves in the area to take refuge. This part of Laos is mountainous and the scenery is quite beautiful. From the seat of my motorcycle the feeling was one of riding through a real-time museum as we passed through endless hill tribe villages with the local kids waving and smiling, without a care in the world. A truly unique and authentic experience.

After a couple of days’ hard riding we arrived in the city of Phonsavan, famous for its “Plain of Jars” (UNESCO world heritage site since 2019). Leaving Phonsavan to the south towards the Rock Forest and the Kong Lor Cave, two places that are well worth visiting. At the Rock Forest they are offering hiking and zip lining activities while at the Kong Lor Cave you can take a boat ride on a river through the mountain. Further south we then stayed overnight in Thakhek, a charming town by the Mekong River.

The following morning we made a detour via Savannakhet to Xepon which is close to the Vietnam border and along the famous road 9, on the 17 ^th parallel, which saw heavy fighting during the Vietnam War. We took time off the bikes to visit a war museum in Lam Son (40 km from Khe Sanh US base in Vietnam). Continuing southbound we traveled on the Lao “Ho Chi Minh Trail” which is truly a “road less travelled” and not marked on any of our maps.

The next route highlight was the Bolaven Plateau. With a maximum elevation of 1,350 meters the area features many scenic waterfalls and coffee plantations while also offering exhilarating motorcycle riding. Our visit coincided with the Buddhist New Year, full of local celebrations, festivities and of course lots of water splashing!

In Southern Laos we visited another UNESCO world heritage site, “Vat Phou”, a Khmer temple built during the same era as the famous Angkor temples in Siem Reap.

After taking a local ferry across the Mekong River we stopped for a well-deserved rest day on Don Khon, one of the 4,000 islands on the Mekong River. This is a beautiful area to explore by boat however part of the river is not possible to navigate due to the rapids. The French colonial power built two ports and a 7km long railway line here for the transportation of goods.

It was now time to leave Laos (and our guide Yai) behind as we crossed the border to Cambodia where we were warmly greeted by our Cambodian tour guide, Nak.

From the border station we rode close to the Vietnam border directly to Ban Lung for our first overnight stay in Cambodia. The next day we started early and took the road south along the Cambodian “Ho Chi Minh Trail” to the highlands located in the south eastern corner of Cambodia. This region features waterfalls and offers a cooler climate making it a popular destination for Cambodian and Vietnamese tourists.

Once again we met the mighty Mekong River, this time checking out the Mekong Dolphins north of Kracheh. The best way to see these magnificent creatures is to take a boat tour on the river. Back on the motorcycles we followed the river, passing a couple of colonial trading towns before reaching the Cambodian capital of Phnom Penh where we indulged ourselves in some (well-deserved) 5-star accommodation and dining.

Our final ride in Cambodia took us to the Tonlé Sap, Southeast Asia's largest freshwater lake and one of the world's richest inland fishing grounds. From that point we needed to use another local ferry crossing after which we rode 40km of dirt roads to Kampong Thom.

We were now at one of the trips’ highlight destinations: “Preah Vihear Temple” yet another UNESCO word heritage site on this tour which is a spectacular temple located on a 525 meter high clifftop and was built by the Khmer’s during the same time as the Angkor temples.

So after adding many roads and locations to our memory banks and planning maps it was now time to cross back into Thailand and head home to Chiang Mai.

In total our scouting ride took 20 Days and covered approximately 5,800 kms.

The experiences were memorable and the best of these will be added to our already extensive tour list through SE Asia.

Seven (7) Rider Tips to Unlock the Motorcycle Experience - Bike Tour Asia

Take your motorcycle experience to the next level with our riding tips.

Travelling and touring by motorcycle is one of the most exciting and freedom-filled experiences we can enjoy.

The thrill and experience can be taken to a new, higher level by improving our riding skills and also our preparation routines.

Lets have a look here at a few points to consider that may well help your motorcycle touring to be smoother & safer.

1. Get back to the basics

Even professional motorcycle riders constantly strive to improve their skills and control.

No matter how much experience we have as motorcycle riders we can always do with a refresher in motorcycle control basics before joining motorcycle adventure tours .

Body position
Emergency braking
Hill starting
Clutch and throttle control at low speeds
Counter steering

A great way to do this is by joining a certified training course. Enjoy a group environment and interaction with other riders and a qualified instructor.

You might go over things you already know but it's helpful to reinforce the ‘good’ habits. Even if you can take away just one point that helps your ability it’s worthwhile.

*Then don’t forget to practice the riding drills regularly. The more you do them the more the controls become instinctive in an emergency situation.

2. Invest in quality riding gear

You’ve laid out your money for the dream motorcycle in your garage - Nice!

Now you're happy to spend some more money to ride new regions by joining a motorcycle adventure tour - Also very nice !

So our message is: "Don’t be too thrifty when it comes to fitting yourself out with riding gear that will be comfortable to wear as well as protect you from the elements and injury in the case of some accident".

Top quality kit is often more expensive however it will always outlast and outperform inexpensive, low quality items. You will save money in the long term and more importantly you can reduce the seriousness of any crash injuries.

Helmet:

There is a saying that if your head is of low value to you then it’s OK to buy a low value helmet ! - No..

Have a safety approved helmet that fits firmly but comfortable to wear all day.

Boots:

Forget the walking shoes or fashion boots….. use specific motorcycle boots with hard materials for foot and ankle protection. A simple low speed or stationary drop of the bike can easily result in a broken ankle or lower leg when wearing inappropriate boots.

Trousers / Jackets:

Higher quality outfits have materials that are more abrasion resistant and are fitted with CE approved protection inserts for contact areas (knees, elbows, shoulders, hips and back).

If you prefer a ‘mesh’ type jacket for cooler riding then that’s OK, but still shop for a brand with the high grade protection inserts.

Gloves :

You want to keep as much ‘feel’ of the motorcycle while riding so avoid extra bulky gloves but be sure to look for solid abrasion protection over the knuckles and extra padding on the heel of the hands. These are the areas that will cop the ‘road rash’ if bracing yourself in a fall.

Some other useful glove features are the rubber wiper blade on the left index finger for wiping across a wet visor during rain and a touch screen friendly pad on the ends of fingers to allow use of GPS or mobile devices without having to remove gloves.

Wet weather protection:

If you go for Gortex material in jacket and trousers then you have the rain protection covered already…..just zip up the vents and you will be very dry.

If wearing non Gortex and using a coverall set of rain jacket/trousers (or one piece rain suit) try to get the brands that provide some breathability in the material, rather than just the plain heavy plastic which you will sweat in !

Hi-vis colours and reflective strips are always a good safety idea for rain gear as it’s usually during poor light conditions that you have it on.

3. Take time to adjust to your ‘new’ motorcycle

Step 1.

As a motorcycle rider joining a motorcycle adventure tour in another region will be riding a different motorcycle to your own….. even if it is the same make and model there can be subtle differences in the setup.

Take some time at the motorcycle handover to check the settings and have the team make any adjustments required to make it feel more comfortable for your riding days ahead.

Pre load of the suspension
Angle and free ‘play’ of levers
Gear lever height
Seat height setting (if adjustable)
Display settings and riding modes changing
Mirror positions

Step 2.

Now that you’re feeling at home while sitting on the bike its time to ride !

For the first session of the first riding day…. TAKE YOUR TIME and get the feel of the motorcycles' handling, braking, throttle response and so on....Expect that it will likely feel different to start with but don’t get frustrated - gradually adjust your responses to the motorcycle outputs and before long your riding will click into sync with your new two wheeled friend.

4. Listen to the local knowledge

Each days ride briefing will include the conditions that may be encountered.

Recent landslide or storm debris on the roads

5. Stay Hydrated

The heat and humidity can dehydrate you very quickly causing you to loose concentration and start feeling fatigued.

You have to be mindful to manage it FROM THE START of each days riding.

*If you are feeling thirsty by lunch time then it's probably too late already!

When on motorcycle adventure tours a backpack with a water bladder and drinking tube is s a great way to stay hydrated as it’s there to regularly sip on as you ride. You don’t have to wait for a stop to get that fluid hit into your system.

Not everyone is comfortable to wear a back pack all day when riding so if that’s your preference make sure when you do take a stop of any kind you also take the opportunity to have a good intake of water.

Hydration tablets in your water bottle can also help to hydrate with less intake and avoid high sugar soft drinks.

You will feel more alert and energetic for sure !

6. Be wary of “overindulging”

It’s a great feeling to complete an enjoyable day of motorcycle riding with a group. You've accomplished a new adventure and everyone relaxes to reflect on the memorable parts of the day. - Great stuff !

A few celebratory drinks then flows into another new dinner experience, followed by seeking out some other venues to kick on or chat to the locals (who are usually interested to find out where the motorcycle travellers have come from and where they are going next). It's a holiday experience as well so it can be easy to get carried away.

Simple message - You won’t enjoy the next days riding as much if you have had no sleep or feeling a little ‘hungover’…

Enough said !

7. Ride within your limits

Motorcycle travel is not a race so, unlike the racetrack, there is no prize for the fastest lap of the day.

The fastest rider is not necessarily the ‘best’ motorcycle rider when in motorcycle adventure tour groups.

The best motorcycle riders are the ones that ride at a pace and style knowing they are in control of the motorcycle and can enjoy the ride in a relaxed, safe mindset.

Most of us enjoy the thrill of giving the throttle a twist when we can. It is part of the freedom and excitement of riding a motorcycle… Don’t back away from that, just stay in control and stay aware of the riding conditions.

Expect the unexpected !

Communicate with the other riders in your group. If you are an experienced rider, encourage less experienced riders and help them improve their skills and awareness.

Vietnam to Angkor Wat: If adding Cambodia to your motorcycle riding road trip in Vietnam you can cross to Stung Treng. This part of the country is full of pepper plantations and a great stop is at Yeak Laom, a volcano lake then countryside becomes flat the last section to Stung Treng, meeting the Mekong River and winding through small villages to Siem Reap. Spend a day to take in the awesomeness of Angkor Wat. The sheer scale of the temple complex is mind blowing, still covered in lush jungle growth and creeping vines, the place is truly awesome.

Coastline Delight: From Koh Kong beach following the Cambodian coastline riding many twisties and nice bends through great scenery to Sihanoukville which is lined with palm-fringed beaches, seafood restaurants and bars. New charity program for Bike Tour Asia - Phop Phra Refugee Camp

Bike Tour Asia has teamed up with Ms. Angkana Pun-Ong (Na) to identify worthwhile charities for BTA to create support projects and partnering.

*Ms. Pun-Ong is the CEO and founder of the "Opportunity of Giving” foundation where their main focus is on providing pathways for local Thai village youths to enter and maintain formal education. ( http://opportunityofgiving.org/ )

*She has close personal ties to the needs of Thai local villages and as an enthusiastic motorcycle rider makes a perfect partner to Bike Tour Asia’s charity projects.

During March this year staff from BTA joined Na on a motorcycle ride to visit a Children’s Refugee Camp located in the Phop Pra district, just south of Mae Sot, Thailand.

Currently this camp has 40 children aged from 5 ~ 21 years of age.

They came across the border from the Myanmar Karen state, looking for support due to families being deceased, disabled or simply not able to care for them properly due to the political turmoil that has led to poverty and unsafe conditions in their home villages.

It was a humbling experience to meet these kids as they welcomed us, showed us around their camp and living quarters, sang for us and (very shyly) talked a little about their dreams to get a better education and lead a more meaningful life.

From this initial visit we are tabling a few possible projects to assist their paths and to become regularly involved in improving their situation. The first need identified is the clean drinking water cost and availability. Currently all is purchased and stored in plastic bottles. Our project is to source and install a water purifying filter system at the main house to provide clean water for drinking and cooking directly from their tap !

Further ahead we are hosting a Charity Ride in March 2024 to take some motorcycling guests to visit the camp and create more awareness of these needy children and encourage some direct support for the future.

Each entry for the ride will include a direct donation of THB2,500 towards delivering some food and supplies when we visit, plus the costs to treat the kids to a day out from the camp with us to enjoy visiting Mae Sot and a special meal (let them be ‘normal’ kids for the day).

New Dual Terrain tour launch

The large adventure bike segment continues to grow with more and more (usually more mature age) riders looking to explore a little off the main roads, without taking the extreme conditions of single trail enduro riding.

At Bike Tour Asia we want to provide an option for this type of motorcycle travel/riding and over the last season we spent many days and weeks going over maps, scouting roads and trails to try and come up with a program that can satisfy that desire to travel some unsealed road sections to give our guests some new but manageable challenges on our BMW GS and Triumph Tigers.

The tour we have designed is named the "GS Trophy Experience" as it happens to follow some of the roads used as part of the official GS Trophy rally when it was hosted in Northern Thailand (2016).

While there is a focus on the unsealed road sections we still include some of the famous (and enjoyable!) great paved road sections of Northern Thailand with there seemingly endless curves.

*Note that while we do rate this tour riding as not 'extreme' it should be clear that you do need to have good experience and confidence to handle a large adventure motorcycle is conditions of gravel, sand, small water crossings, etc.

*Quality off-road motorcycle riding gear is essential.

S etting up the Girl Moto Tour of Thailand: November 2022

I had the pleasure of riding the Mae Hong Son loop in March 2022. After returning to Australia, I couldn’t stop thinking about my experience. It wasn’t just the stunning landscape of mountain pines, rice paddy fields, Thai jungle, and the scattering of authentic villages that had me buzzing.

No. It was the sense of achievement I experienced after conquering five days of riding through the magnificent, and at times challenging, twisties on offer. It had me high fiving myself for weeks after returning home to Australia.

This feeling of achievement was euphoric, and I wanted to replicate that for the female riders in my life. I wasn’t wasting any time either. I rode the Loop in March 2022, but I knew that I wanted our ladies’ group to do this tour in November 2022.

BNSCLC Water Aggregation Project Completed!

As part of BNSCLCs’ goal to establish organic farming and becoming self sufficient for vegetables, Bike Tour Asia stepped in to partner the fund raising and sponsorship for the water supply needed from the nearby river.

It required the purchase and installation of quality equipment such as submersible pump, solar panels to power the pump, over 150m of piping, 4 x 2000 litre storage tanks and sprinkler systems to service the adjacent agricultural land.

We are extremely happy and proud to announce that in September the funds required were achieved and during October the installation has been completed with the system now up and running for the teachers and students to push forward with their sustainability ambitions.

We look forward to checking out the progress further at our visit in Feb. 2022 (and maybe tasting some of the local produce !).

2022 Charity Ride was a great success !

Our New Year has kicked off with some great local tours and scouting rides around Northern Thailand , culminating in our Charity Ride which was a fantastic success for riding, group participation and of course helping the BNS Community Learning Centre.

The students prepared welcome food and gifts to say thanks for the completed water and irrigation system, now in full operation, providing so many benefits for growing food, cooking and cleaning.

There was time to share the ‘big bike’ experience with the kids by way of some pillion rides and lots of selfies!

Our next project (for 2022) was identified with the Learning Centre staff as some dormitory and bathroom facilities in urgent need of repair & upgrades.

The work scope is already being detailed for action and our group fund raising will hopefully get it all across the line well before our visit in 2023.

Progress of building renovations project at BNSCLC (May 2022)

During our last visit to BNSCLC in February 2022 we agreed to support renovation of the leaking dormitory roof and new sanitary facilities for the students, (including a well).

With the help of Philanthropy Connections a budget was set: 45’000 baht for dormitory roof and 66’000 baht for sanitary facilities. (Total 110’000 baht).

To date we have received 76’500 baht in donations….. thank you very much to all who have contributed!

Also a special thanks to Michael Franklin who, through his family foundation, has donated 15 brand new pc’s and tablets to the school.

We want these young men and women to fulfill their dreams and live in a safe environment where they can focus on their studies.

We believe in a better future for these students and their communities. With your help we can help many more.

Daniel’s Review: The Road to Umphang

One of my favorite rides in Thailand is the road from Mae Sot to Umphang. The road with its 1,219 curves snakes its way over the mountains along the Thai – Myanmar border for some 180 km.

Since Umphang is the end of the road and the only way is to go back the same way, there is mostly very little traffic on this road.

Along the road you pass many hill tribe villages, Karen, Hmong, Lisu, Mien and Lahu. Umphang is predominantly Karen.

Outside Upmhang is the biggest virgin rain forest in Thailand. The wild life sanctuary is a home to animals such as elephants, leopards, langurs, bears, tigers, tapirs, deer and others. Many species of butterflies and birds!

Thi Lor Su Waterfall, largest in Thailand, some 200 meters high is some 40 km from Umphang and is well worth a visit.

Rider Review: 4-day Self Guided Motorcycle Tour from Chiang Mai

As a regular working visitor to Bangkok I had often heard about how much different the landscape and lifestyle was in the northern mountain regions of the “land of smiles” so back in 2018 when I had some time clear from work duties I headed to Chang Mai to plan some exploring.

Motorcycle is always my preferred mode of transport when checking out new places and after some google searching and many positive trip advisor reviews, I contacted Daniel at Bike Tour Asia .

Customising My Tour

The team at BTA was all about designing the most suitable experience by asking lots of questions:

How is your riding experience?
How many days do you want to take?
What size bike is most comfortable for you?
Do you want a guide to go with you or prefer ‘self-guided’ with our help?
Want to try local food?
Any particular places or sightseeing you want to visit?

The resources and experience that BTA have built up allowed me to tailor my trip around all of these things.

In my case, this time around, I was happy to travel alone, but as I had only 4 days free I preferred to have a basic route and accommodation pre-planned to avoid wasting time on boring roads and trying to find suitable lodgings at the end of each day.

No problems! – They told me “Tomorrow we’ll pick you up from your Chang Mai hotel and bring you to BTA service centre. Your BMW F800GS will be ready to roll out after a briefing of your route and GPS system”.

Starting out

And so it was, I was presented with a detailed map (mine to keep), a booklet with printouts of daily distances, optional stops and of course that night’s accommodation. All of that info was also loaded into the bikes GPS.

Safety was also made clear prior to departure, with plenty of contact numbers for emergency services, tourist police and BTA staff. The bike pannier contained tools for tyre repair, jump start and other basics just in case. (thankfully in my case none of it was needed but it’s always good to have a plan ‘B’ !!).

Now it was time to ride and after running with the busy traffic out from Chang Mai for half-hour or so I took a right-hand turn off the main road and headed north into Doi Inthanon National Park. This was certainly the change of scenery I had been promised.

The roads….

It is hard to believe the quality of the twisting roads through this mountainous region…. You are literally in the jungle but on mostly smooth, grippy, and well-marked sweeping roads. Explained to me that these roads were constructed and are maintained by the military to provide quick access to all of Thailands northern borders if ever there may be conflict… All I can say to the Thai army is thank you very much!

To change it up from time to time the BTA guys had added in some detours off these roads to take me through more remote village areas, plantations and so on. It was great to drop the riding pace for a while and really take in the green landscapes and peaceful feeling these rural areas provide.

The lodgings…….

The accommodations that were pre-booked for me would be near impossible to find on your own. They are mostly what I would describe as jungle resorts, providing high quality, clean & comfortable rooms while blending into the environment. Add to that the genuine Thai hospitality from your arrival welcoming, to cold beers served at the pool and an endless choice of Thai cuisine. A big thumbs up!

The cultural side…….

During the days there were lots of options to stop and enjoy some unique places..
Elephant camps, waterfalls, high altitude lookouts, tea plantations, lakefront restaurants… even an opium museum from the old days of the Golden Triangle trade.

I could please myself as to where or how long I stopped or even deviate from the formal route to investigate other roads and use the GPS to easily get back on track.

A promise to come back……..

4 days was a great introduction to a new region and style of motorcycle touring. I’m now looking forward to getting back to do more and dragging a few mates along to show them what I have been talking up since returning home from this trip.

SCOUTING THE ROADS LESS TRAVELED ALONG THE MYANMAR BORDER

The idea was to scout “hidden gems” along the Thai – Myanmar border. Not that long ago this area was inaccessible for two reasons – lack of roads and opium growing, meaning is was an outright dangerous place to visit.

Once I started riding, I found that the scenery was stunning, nature was green and beautiful, there was very little traffic or people, and opium fields have been replaced with fruit orchards, tea and coffee plantations.

There are some villages, each occupied by different hill tribes. Also plenty of Yunnan Chinese settlements after the civil war in China. Roads are in good shape, there are plenty of single track concrete roads snaking its way through mountains, jungle, villages, and plantations. Locals are noticing us when we pass with our R1200GS motorcycles. Everyone is giving us a warm smile and shy wave with the hand.

I love this kind of riding, when every curve is a new experience. The question in my head, will this great road condition last, or will the road end in the middle of nowhere? The amazing thing is that the roads always continue into other roads, even if gravel, still passable and enjoyable.

After returning back home to Chiang Mai full of inspiration, we have plenty of new itinerary ideas, and new lunch and coffee

shops to share with our BTA friends once possible to return to Thailand and ride with us!

Wayne's Rider Review of the "VIETNAM, LAOS AND THAILAND” TOUR

Don’t ask me how I ended up there or why I needed this trip, but I did. I’ve traveled to many places, but Asia was one of the last places on earth that I ever imagined travelling to. I had seen the Hollywood movies that can easily lead one to believe that any place outside of your hometown is fraught with danger. I’ve seen The Hangover Part II… I now find that perception laughable. I came away from my experience among the population in this part of Asia with a new appreciation for people, their ways, and their kindness, and the calm among what appears in the traffic circles to be absolute chaos.

“Ok everybody, here are some fun facts: The population in Thailand is 63 million people, it is twice the size of Wyoming, none of you know Stu like I do…” – Zach Galifianakis (from the movie The Hangover Part II)

Bike Tour Asia offers a combination guided or self guided tours. I chose the guided tour. My bike trips are usually solo adventures often lasting many months without much planning, so this was a new experience for me in many ways. I looked at this option much like when I first skied Canada’s rocky mountains. I was already an accomplished skier but I joined a ski school in order to cut lift lines with the instructor and get the most runs in. As an added benefit I was shown some of the out of the way places and spectacular trails that I would never have found on my own. In Asia rather than just connect the dots between popular tourist destinations, I also wanted that added bonus of local knowledge of obscure places the throngs of tourists just don’t go.

When we landed at the airport in Chiang Mai, a Northern city in the foothills of the Himalayan mountains, we were met with open arms and taken to a spectacular hotel inside the city’s ancient walls. From there we were taken to Bike Tour Asia’s headquarters where we met up with our BWW bikes and crew for a pre-ride briefing and shakedown ride back to the hotel in order to become familiar with the local traffic customs. The rest of the day we were on our own to walk around Chiang Mai and see the sights (something interesting enough that I chose to spend an extra week doing more of at the end of my tour.)

The next morning we headed for the hills and our tour of through the three countries of Thailand, Laos and Vietnam. Our particular tour was designed with a mix of challenging roads to exercise our BMW GS motorcycles all terrain capabilities, as well as some of the best pavement and mountain passes in the world.

Bike tour Asia has many packages depending on which part of Asia you want to spend time in, and they types of roads that you want to experience. Our particular tour was a combination of remote villages, local cuisine and spectacular hotels. The juxtaposition of sights and sounds mad the experience something that I will never forget.

THE LOCAL CUISINE

Common questions that I get from my North American friends seem to revolve around food, and I have to admit that was one of my initial concerns as well. I was raised on roast beef and mashed potatoes. About the most adventurous food in our hose hold growing up was a sprinkle of black pepper, or, if we were really daring we’d add a touch of horseradish, so you can understand why I was concerned about the spices.

On our first evening together our guides ordered for us, selecting a combination of tame, somewhat spicy and really adventurous foods for us to sample, and throughout the tour they took care of our needs in this way. As a result I was slowly introduced to more and more dishes and local cuisine from each area. I stretched my comfort zone when I wanted to and they helped me play it safe when I wanted that, particularly the next morning after getting into some bad tequila the night before, at least I think the tequila had gone bad, I couldn’t think of any other reasons for feeling the way that I did after drinking heavily on an empty stomach.

I’m a compulsive do-it-yourselfer but I have to say, for the first time in my life going on a multi day motorcycle tour and only having to worry about where I left my helmet was refreshing. We were pampered at each hotel, we roughed it for lunch in some remote villages for variety, and travelled at our own pace, meeting up at forks in the road to regroup when necessary. Bike Tour Asia also offers self guided packages which include a BMW bike and pre-programmed GPS if you prefer to travel that way.

Since our tour included four border crossing, our guides sent paperwork and handlers ahead so that we could clear quickly. This is something that is impossible for a solo traveler in some regions since it not only involves personal paperwork for each rider, but also the importation of bikes. You can’t just show up at the border with a passport and expect to ride through on your own. As a licenced tour company with guides licensed in each country, border crossings were a non-issue for us. I hadn’t appreciated until learning more about the region, what huge value travelling with Bike Tour Asia provides in this regard.

THE ROADS

I have ridden almost every “must-do” highway in North America from Florida to the Arctic Ocean, and from California to Canada’s east coast. Highway 1 in California is nice, the blue ridge parkway and tail of the dragon are interesting, the Bear tooth pass through the Rocky mountains into Montana is a nice experience, but Canada’s Gaspe Peninsula is spectacular enough to make those other roads a yawn.

With that North American perspective in place, believe me when I say that in comparison to the roads that I experienced back home, the ones in Northern Thailand, Laos and Vietnam, makes riding in North America almost seam like a waste of time. Riding in the foothills of the Himalayan mountains and onto the plains of Vietnam is that good!

“MYANMAR AND THE TOP OF THAILAND” TOUR Report

This was my first time travelling to Myanmar. About a decade ago, I went to Mae Sai and crossed the border to Tachileik for a couple of hours, but that was just for sightseeing and shopping. This trip made me explore what Myanmar truly is and experience the beauty of its people and culture.

We started in Chiang Mai. Some of our guests decided to spend some time in Thailand before the start of the tour and came a couple days earlier. They enjoyed sight-seeing in the city and some elephants. We all met up at Bike Tour Asia service center for the motorcycle handover.

Everyone was eager for this trip. At the welcome dinner, we got to know each and celebrated Frank’s birthday.

On the second day, we kicked off from the suburb hotel in Chiang Mai and headed to Chiang Rai. We used the back road Via Phrao District. The road was quite small but nice.

You would enjoy riding up to the mountain and seeing the city down below. We stopped for lunch near Doi Chang, where one of the best coffees in the world is grown.

We went up to see the plantation on Doi Chang.

Next stop, we went to the White Temple. We took some pictures and explored inside the temple.

There was a small, artificial waterfall at the back of the temple. The design was interesting; it was a combination between Thai (Theravada) and Chinese (Mahayana) Buddhism, with some western influence like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and their master.

We spent the night in the heart of Chiang Rai, having barbeque ribs for dinner.

On the next day, we went to the golden triangle, where the border of Myanmar, Laos and Thailand meets, separated by the Ruek and Mekong rivers.

Kung and I went ahead to the border in Mae Sai to prepare the border crossing process. It took around 1 hour before we crossed the border and met with Crystal, our Burmese associate.

After getting our Visas stamped, we had lunch in Tachileik, the border city in Shan State.

We met Tun, our local guide. He gave us a brief introduction to the Union of Myanmar; It consists of 8 different ethnic groups, with Bamar (Burmese) people being the majority populace, and is divided into 7 States (one for each ethnic group) and 7 Regions (for Barma people).

We went to Keng Tong (or Kyaing Tung) to stay for a night. We had dinner at the local restaurant by the small lake.

The fourth day of the trip, we kept going west to the city named Nam Sang. The road that day was challenging. There was only a single paved lane while on both sides of the road were gravel or dirt waiting for the pavement to be laid. We had to share the road with the trucks coming to Keng Tong. However, the view on the mountain was beautiful. We rode along the river and mountain in the morning and in the afternoon we passed more towns.

We came across the Ngwe people. Their tradition was that married women would shave their heads and put on the turban-like cloth for the rest of their life.

We stayed at Nam Sang, a city between Keng Tong and Taungyi. The weather was colder than Keng Tong. It was a tiring day, yet we were still happy and looking forward to the next day.

The fifth day was short. We started at 8.30am and rode to Taungyi, the capital city of Shan State. Taungyi was beautiful. The city itself is on the mountain top. When we rode down from the city, we saw the other small cities below.

We arrived at the hotel next to Inle Lake in the afternoon. We temporarily changed ourselves from “Bike Tour” to “Boat Tour” and took the boat to the restaurant on the lake and had lunch there. All the ingredients in our food was from the lake itself. We spent the rest of the afternoon on a boat trip to the village inside the lake.

Boats are the only transportation for the village inside the lake. We saw the famous Lotus Thread Weaving, and the paper umbrellas made from hemp.

On the way back we saw a renowned fishermen of Inle Lake, in which they did the multitasking of carrying a fish trap and rowing their boats with their feet at the same time.

After the boat trip we had dinner at a winery, enjoying the food and local wine.

On the sixth day, we left for Bagan, Mandalay Region. We stopped at Meitikla for lunch, and then passed by the air force base of Myanmar. We arrived at Bagan in the late afternoon. (Bagan, once an empire, was founded in the second century and became the capital city of Myanmar for around 200 years.)

After taking resting for a bit, we went to see the sunset at the sunset hill – the artificial hill made especially for sunset viewing. It was a bit disappointing when it was too cloudy to see the sun set properly, but the next morning some of us got up early and went to see the sunrise at the same place.

We found a nice Italian/Burmese restaurant for dinner and had a delicious meal. After breakfast the next morning, we split into 2 groups; one group went for a city tour while the other group stayed at the hotel and chilled out with the idyllic view of the Irrawaddy River. We didn’t ride and decided to do some maintenance on our bikes in preparation for the rest of the trip

The eighth day, we rode to Naypyidaw, the current capital city of Myanmar. The road was easy to navigate and mostly flat. We stopped for lunch in Magway, the capital city of Magway Region. We arrived at the entrance to Naypyidaw in the afternoon, where the tourist police waited for us with an escort police car.

The police brought us through the 20-lane boulevard to the Uppatasanti Pagoda, a replica of Shwedagon Pagoda in Yangon, and to the hotel. We spent the evening having dinner at a local restaurant.

The next day was a bit challenging. We rode from Naypyidaw to Kyaikto, Mon State, sharing the road with trucks and other motorcycles. Since motorcycles are not allowed to use the Naypyidaw-Yangon express way, we had to use the other road instead. Riding was long and hot because we were on the plain and not the mountain anymore. There were a lot of trucks along the way since they could not use the express way either. We crossed the bridge over Sittaung River as it flowed towards the Gulf of Martaban. It was the first time since we arrived in Myanmar that we saw the sea. We stayed at the base of the trail to Kyaiktiyo Pagoda.

On the tenth day of the trip, the last day in Myanmar, we got up early to get on a truck and went up to Kyaiktiyo, where the famous pagoda The Golden Rock was located. According to legend, the Golden Rock itself is precariously perched on a strand of the Buddha’s hair. The balancing rock seems to defy gravity, as it perpetually appears to be on the verge of rolling down the hill. We spent some time exploring the temple and taking some pictures with the golden rock, and then came back and prepared to take off.

We rode straight to Myawaddy, Kayin State, the border city west of Mae Sot, border city of Thailand. The road was simple until after lunch, then there was a lot of road construction to expand the road to the border. Everything was dusty and red, but our riders conquered it.

We arrived at the border in the late afternoon, just before the border closing time. We stayed at the hotel in Mae Sot, and went for a Thai food restaurant. By this time, we missed Thai food so much.

It was the eleventh day of the trip. We went straight to Mae Hong Son, passing the refugee camp of Karen people who fled the conflict and persecution from the Burmese Government. The road that day was very nice, well paved, a bit curvy up and down the small hills and mountains. We stopped at Mae Sarieng for lunch before resuming the ride to Mae Hong Son.

We enjoyed the swimming pool, Thai massage, and a lovely dinner at the hotel. The day had been a long stretch of riding but an easy and scenic one.

On the morning of the next day we changed again from Bike Tour to Boat Tour temporarily and went to the Long Neck (Kayan) tribe village by boat. We spent the morning exploring and meeting with Kayan people. Then, we rode to Ban Rak Thai, one of the biggest Yunnanese villages in Thailand.

We went to Myanmar again through a small border control to visit a school in the bordering village. After leaving the school, we came back and had Yunnanese food for lunch. Ban Rak Thai consist of Yunnanese descendants whose ancestors fled the conflict after the Kuomintang lost to Mao Zedong’s Communist Party of China in 1949. Since Myanmar shares its border with Yunnan Province, it was easy for the refugees to travel to Thailand through Myanmar. They’ve never left Thailand since then, and named the village “Ban Rak Thai” which means the village that loves Thailand.

After lunch, we continued to Pai, the so-called capital of hippies in Thailand. We had dinner by the river Pai, and then explored the night market before going to bed.

The thirteenth and last riding day, we went back to Chiang Mai through a back road to Galyani Vadhana, and Samoeng District. We had lunch at a local restaurant in Samoeng before going down to Hang Dong, Chiang Mai where our service center is located.

After returning the bikes we went to stay in a hotel downtown with a different atmosphere and vibe from the first night in Chiang Mai. We had a farewell dinner with barbecued ribs and steak. As we enjoyed our meal, we shared our experiences on the tour, recalling the good times we had together before saying goodbye.

We spent 2 weeks riding together for over 3,000 km, more than 6,000 curves and across 2 countries.

Everyone was a good rider. Sometimes we came across unexpected situations, but we made it through together. When we looked back it was very fun and we laughed together every time someone brought it up. We experienced Myanmar culture. Myanmar people were very nice and kind. The food was good and plenty. The scenery was beautiful. That was more than enough for a good memory.

Challenging Dual Tour for US Riders

“Everything far surpassed my expectations.” This comment from a group of farmers and cowboys from Idaho, USA. They booked a 13 day dual tour which covers the Northern part of Thailand. We customized this tour by adding some off-road sections as per their request. On-road sections brought them to tourist attractions and they enjoyed a winding curvy road. The off-road section gave them a chance to explore a non-tourist side of Thailand with some riding conditions that challenged even the most experienced riders.

January is the best time to come to Thailand. The weather is perfect – always sunny at around 20-25 ํC without any sign of rain. That’s good news due to some off-road sections that would be impassable in the rainy season. In the meantime, Thai farmers just finished their first harvest and started to grow a second crop. We rode through agriculture areas and saw people plant rice by hand, a mountain created by corn chaff, a water buffalo walking around a rice field before laying down in the mud, and hill tribe people celebrating their traditional New year party.

Our cowboys appreciated the itinerary we created for them. It was a great mix of wonderful riding experience and unique cultural experiences.

Harley Guys on BMWs for 5 Days of Temples, Caves, Great Food and Great Roads

Asian Trails with Luzi and friends’ trip report from January 18 – 22, 2020

“Born to be wild” was the name we gave this amazing group that set up a whatsapp group before the tour even started. The moment they “met” their bike, I knew that some of them had never ridden a BMW motorcycle before. I was dealing with Harley Davidson guys again. We spent a good hour getting everyone in gear and had a short briefing about the features on a BMW and safety. This group has been riding and living in Thailand longer than I have lived in Thailand!

We rode this 5-day customized Chiang Rai and Mae Hong Son Loop with Mr. Luzi and his friends. The first day ride was quite short, but since we left Chiang Mai at 10 am, I had to change the plan a little bit. Instead of riding up the curvy mountain through Phrao, I went straight on the main highway. The first stop was at a hot spring where we took a short coffee break before lunch. Then we rode to Doi Chang for our first lunch together. Everyone was fed with Thai food and pizza. After lunch we went water crossing on the motorcycles before we made a short stop at the White Temple. Nobody went into the temple, but just took a quick group photo since they’ve been there quite a few times already.

The first night, the group was quite ecstatic with the hotel in Chiang Rai by Kok River – the Legend Chiang Rai Boutique River Resort & Spa. I got an invitation from Luzi to stay in his fabulous hotel for two nights in Chiang Rai while we were riding up to Phu Chi Fah and returned the next day.

Our first dinner was very exciting with Luzi’s choice at Hungry Wolfs Steak & Ale House. We all shared a huge 1.7 kilogram steak called a “Tomahawk”, which was cut by an American chef from New York at the table.

A mountain was calling to us on the second day up to Phu Chi Fah with an unexpected short off-road detour and fun throughout the day. It was a great ride with good weather and a panoramic mountain view at lunch up there. A special birthday arrangement was made before dinner by Luzi for a father and son who shared the same birthday. Everything was quite special, memorable and well prepared for the “born to be wild” group.

Day 3 had us about to start the 1,864 curves as we left Chiang Rai to head to Pai. We were enroute to Chiang Dao to have lunch there before riding straight to the hotel in Pai. This day was about conquering a hundred curves. We ended in Pai, where we had dinner by the Pai River before everybody split up to enjoy massages and the famous Pai Walking Street.

We woke up fresh and ready for another journey, but I had a special request to stop by Tham Phi Man Cave on the way before lunch. I promised them that I’d take them for a ride across the Myanmar border and do something fun. The cave was quite exhausting since it’s 300 meters trekking up the mountain, but we were able to laugh about it. We were all hungry and ready to ride to lunch at Ban Rak Thai. We had a little accident before lunch after a photo stop at Chang Coffee – I lost Luzi and Rowland, but managed to rescue them back in Mae Hong Son. We all had a very good Chinese lunch, then headed out to the border. I called ahead to the school that we were coming with some donations. The military post let us pass by quite easily since we were going to the school. When we got to school, the children were very excited to see bikers again in their parking lot. The teacher told them to line up and we started to hand out our supplies that we brought from Thailand. After finishing handing out donations, we went for a boat ride to the Long Neck village. Soon after, we found ourselves sipping an ice cold beer by the infinity pool at Fern Resort. There’s nothing else compared to the view of the rice paddies, sunset and a group of the riders holding an ice cold beer in their hand at the moment.

The last day of our long journey back to Chiang Mai had a war museum visit, Doi Inthanon and waterfall. The road conditions were not quite smooth but still had some good curves and tarmac to compensate. Since they had been off road in Phu Chi Fah, this was just an easy task for them. We went to the highest point of Thailand, Doi Inthanon after lunch just for a photo. They were skeptical about the waterfall, but we went and they weren’t disappointed. They loved the waterfall and also got a good picture there. After a good coffee we continued to ride straight back to Chiang Mai and returned the bikes safely.

5 Days Riding With BWM Club from Taiwan

I personally picked up and welcomed BMW Motorrad Owners Club of Taiwan and riders from Taiwan at Chiang Mai International Airport. Thanks to our friend and partner, Mr. Johnny Chen, who kept bringing us a big group of riders and pillions from Taiwan. After I met up with all of the guests, we went off to the hotel and picked up the motorcycle from our service center and I led them on a ride back to the hotel.

I usually welcome everyone and introduce the first genuine Thai food dinner to our riders. This time I took them to the Riverside Bar & Restaurant by the Ping River. It’s a very nice restaurant with good tasty Thai food and a grand view of the Ping River. We were all transported by the symbolic red taxi of Chiang Mai or “Song Taw” for a good 10 minute ride from the hotel.

We started out on our 5 day Chiang Rai and the famous Mae Hong Son Loop tour in the early morning, starting from the middle of Chiang Mai downtown. The first ride of the day is always a bit of a challenge to some of the guests, especially if they have never ridden in Asia before. Chiang Rai is ahead of us tonight and everybody expects to see the famous and remarkable White Temple before getting to the hotel. We rode through the mountainous and curvy back roads to Phrao and further up to Doi Chang with its coffee plantation and stunningly beautiful view. After lunch at Doi Chang, we surprised our guests with a little water crossing at the Huay San Plubpla Water Reservoir. Our guests got a chance to prove their riding boots are not so waterproof this time.

We stayed at Le Patta, a nice clean hotel in the center of the city where our guests can take a stroll to the night market for massage and souvenir shopping. The first day went well and the guests were quite happy with an easy ride up to the mountain and ended up with great food and good massage.

The second day of the ride was to Thaton. Along the way we took a short boat ride across the Mekong River from the Golden Triangle to visit Laos. After re-entry back to Thai side again, we rode to Choui Fong Tea Plantation and made a special stop at a small village where General Tuan School was in Doi Mae Salong before we arrived at Mae Kok River Village. Another great riding day with a local lunch in the hotel.

We woke up the next day and were looking forward to starting our first part of 1,864 curves to Pai – which we call the “party town” that is full of street bars and a night market. We took a short ride up to Wat Thaton to look over the stunning view of this town. It was a beautiful road ahead of us from Thaton to Chiang Dao, where we had a local lunch in the garden before continuing on to Pai. We stayed a night at the Quarter where we put on our shorts and flip flops and walked to the night market to blend in with the locals and tourists.

The next morning, the ride was a little different than the rest because it involved a couple of elephants. Our destination that night was Fern Resort, Mae Hong Son. The beautiful resort is in the middle of rice fields where one can enjoy and relax with an ice cold beer by the pool overlooking the fields natural water streaming down from the mountain. Our lunch was quite special at the Chinese Community Village in Ban Rak Thai and we had a chance to walk across the border to Myanmar to visit the one and only school in the village. We also brought some school supplies to donate to those little kids in Myanmar. After lunch, another boat ride to the Karen Long Neck Village was ahead of us. The village where women wear heavy brass rings around their neck, forearms, and shins. Many ideas regarding why the coils are worn have been suggested. Some have hypothesized that the rings protected women from becoming slaves by making them less attractive to other tribes. Another theory is that the coils originate from the desire to look more attractive. We ended up at the resort with a special hot pot dinner which our guests cook themselves, and later everyone joined around the bonfire before calling it a night.

On the last day, our guests woke up a little tired but still eager to see the Mexican Sunflower Field in Khun Yuam which blooms once a year. We left the resort and took a back road up the curvy mountain. We stopped at the beautiful water reservoir to take pictures before lunch in Mae Cham. After lunch we made one last stop at Wachirathan waterfall and continued back safely to our Service Center. We had our last farewell dinner together and I passed them the 1,864 curves certificate. Everybody was surprised and grateful for the trip.

First time for Experienced Dutch Riders to do a BMW Motorcycle Tour!

A review of our 10-Day Tour of Northern Thailand tour which includes the famous Mae Hong Son Loop.

“The most spectacular tour I have ever done in my life” …. was one of the comments we got from a riding group from the Netherlands. This was a group of friends that has been riding together on cruising motorcycles for more than 6 years all over the world, but this was their first time to tour with BMW motorcycles. So, we made some adjustments to our regular itinerary especially for them.

We started the first day with an easy day’s ride around Chiang Mai to get to know the bikes. Then we continued on up north to Chiang Rai and east to Nan. Here we had to put the bikes on the ferry which crosses the Sirikit dam on our way to a UNESCO World Heritage site … Sukhothai, which was the first capital of Thailand around 700 years ago.

Here we swapped our motorcycles to regular bicycles to stretch our legs and explore the historical park. The next station is Mae Sot, the border town on the border with Myanmar.

After a short and easy day we then had a challenging riding day in front of us. The road from Mae Sot to Mae Hong Son is almost 400 km and full of curvy, winding switchbacks and ups and downs through the mountains with very light traffic.

That evening we stayed in the charming Fern Resort where everyone had a chance to relax in the middle of a jungle valley. The next ride was on to the party town of Pai, where the boys enjoyed shopping in the walking street and the selection of cocktails and beer bars. The last morning we took it easy, getting a late start for the easy ride back to Chiang Mai.

After 8 Riding days with 2,000 km and 6,000+ curves around Northern Thailand, the boys were impressed with the tour setup, good road conditions, fantastic local Thai food, great weather and especially with the bikes. They promised to come back for a longer tour, such as our Vietnam tour. We are looking forward to riding again with all these awesome people again on the next tour!

Great Riding for the December 2019 Amazing Land of Lanna Tour

What could be better than riding great roads and meeting new friends that share a passion for travel, exploration and good times? Our recent ‘Amazing Land of Lanna’ tour just finished up, our guests have returned home, taking many memories, experiences and pictures with them!

We had 9 riders come from Wales, Germany and Slovenia on this 10 day Guided Tour – experienced riders that had not ridden in Asia before. This tour was a terrific introduction for them about what all Thailand and Southeast Asia has to offer for dedicated riders.

The initial bike handover was done on November 30th, with everyone arriving, meeting each other and getting their bikes. Each bike is named for famous ladies (mostly singers), and so the riders had fun finding out which famous lady they would be traveling with for the duration of the tour! ��

The Amazing Land of Lanna route totals 1,700 km and +8,000 curves of the best of Northern Thailand’s sights and roads, which are mainly paved rural two lane roads with a variety of surfaces and wind through areas of spectacular mountainous beauty.

From Chiang Mai, the “Rose of the North” we rode to the remote province of Nan, which for centuries remained autonomous and cut off from the outside world. Even with this being tourist season in Thailand, Nan is quiet with hardly a tourist in sight!

We stopped by the unique village of Bo Kluea with its Salt Wells, where we watched people collect salt from these truly unusual geological anomalies.

Then we traveled on to the city of Chiang Rai and the stunning White Temple – known as Wat Rong Khun.

The tour also went to more famous or infamous places like the Golden Triangle by the Mekong River, where Laos, Myanmar and Thailand meet and where in previous decades the opium poppy provided a living to many people until it was stopped in 1996 after the death of Khun Sa, a legendary drug lord. We went on the mekong by boat and visited a market in Laos.

The town of Pai is getting very popular due to its laid back culture and easy access to the northern Thailand mountains. We spent one night in Pai, exploring the walking street and eating some amazing Thai food while overlooking the river that runs through the center of town.

Between Mae Taeng and Mae Hong Son, there are 1,864 curves in the road which gave everybody a great opportunity to improve their cornering skills. Some of the switchbacks are quite extreme, but presented no problems for our group of riders.

One of our stops that most tourists never get to do is a side road to the Thai-Myanmar border. It’s a small border crossing that goes to a small Burmese village.

The village is poor, but has a school only a few meters from the border crossing. We called the teacher at the school a few weeks previously and found out that during the winter nights and cool mornings, many of the kids don’t have any warm clothing to wear to stay warm enough.

So we were able to get two large bags of clothing and some footballs to help them out. The border guards let us cross without any problems after they saw what we had in mind, and even though it was a Saturday, just about the whole village collected at the school as the motorcycles roared in and parked.

The children lined up and each patiently waited for their turn as our tour group all pitched in to help match up the clothing to the right sized child. The teacher and parents were very appreciative, and it was so wonderful to see little children carefully folding up their new sweaters and long-sleeved shirts, tucking them under their arms and waving goodbye once we crossed the border back into Thailand.

Among the highlights of the trip, we also took a river boat ride to visit the Long Neck Women of the Karen Tribe, famous for the brass rings that they wear around their necks.

The final night, we stayed at the Fern Resort just outside of Mae Hong Son, and everyone enjoyed the luxury of first class amenities in bamboo cabins nestled in the jungle. A bonfire was enjoyed after dinner.

The final day, we visited the Thai-Japan World War 2 museum which reveals the fascinating story of how the war played out in this region, with many artifacts from the war on display.

Before returning to Chiang Mai, we drove to the top of Thailand – the highest mountain in Thailand (Doi Inthanon), 2,565 meters, which again features some very exciting riding. On the way done and before returning to the main office, we stopped by a massive waterfall to finish off our sightseeing!

Scouting Trip For New Route!

December is usually dry and sunny in North Thailand. We are planning a private dual 11 days tour with a group of riders end January.

Last weekend we took two of our R1200GS, put off-road tires on and took off. We explored single and dual-track roads in Doi Tung / Chiang Rai area.

Continued to Chiang Dao and did some beautiful roads through the wildlife sanctuary, dirt roads to Huai Nam Dang National Park.

From here along the 1’864 curve road to Mae Hong Son. From here we did the Elephant track back to Wat Chan and Chiang Mai. This 80km off-road section brought us through beautiful mountains and scenery.

Crossing over mountains and rivers, up to 1650 meters above sea level. A true adventure riders paradise.

Tour Review: Vietnam and Laos (Sep 2019)

I need to confess that this tour was blessed with all the things that make a great tour:

Perfect weather
Great group dynamic that was perfectly sized at 8 people
Similar riding skill levels throughout the group
Smooth border crossings all the way
A terrific selection of unique resorts throughout the tour

Preparations

After an entire month of the organization to prepare all essential documents and permits, we were ready to take off in late September.

Participants

Our riders and pillions came from very different parts of the world – Australia, Egypt, Pakistan, the USA, Thailand and Germany. The youngest was a pillion of 16 years and the oldest was over 70. Despite every doubt before the tour, it was a great bunch of people, humorous and no issues with communication.

Itinerary

We rode almost 3,500 km in 12 riding days with a rest day in Sapa, Vietnam. This is an average of 300 km per day which sounds reasonable but most of the days were quite intense, reaching the hotel, not before 5 pm.

How many thousands of curves did we conquer? How many mountains ranges we crossed? How many villages did we pass? Countless!

Vietnam

We focused on the mountainous areas in Northern Vietnam – a delicacy for motorcycle riders. The highlight in Vietnam is the amazing landscape of Sapa and Nghia Loh with impressive steep rice terraces and some of the most spectacular winding roads in SE Asia.

We bypassed Hanoi due to its crazy traffic. The Ho Chi Minh Highway sounds more romantic than it actually is. The traffic is tough with constantly honking trucks and vehicles. It felt like heavy metal music.

In Hoi An we swapped the bikes with a boat to explore some of the amazing caves of the so-called “Dry Halong Bay” before returning to Laos.

Laos

Riding in remote Laos is like riding in Thailand some 50 years ago. And “Thailand’s little sister” still is charming even though the rising Chinese influence is obvious. Several huge projects are currently underway, e.g. the construction of 414 km (257 miles) railway line, a link between Kunming and the Laotian capital Vientiane.

While many roads suffer from heavy trucks, Laos still has some of the best and remotest roads of this tour. Highlight: The newly opened road between Luang Prabang and Kasi. 100 km of AWESOMENESS!

Another highlight was the UNESCO heritage site of Luang Prabang. A “pearl” and one of the most beautiful towns in SE Asia.

Thailand

After 11 intense days of riding in Laos and Vietnam, it felt almost strange to ride on the left side again. We enjoyed the nicely paved roads in the Nan area and the wide selection of chic coffee places for the remaining 2 days.

Border Crossings

For this route, 4 border crossings were required and none of them took longer than an hour. I can’t remember a previous tour with such smooth immigration processes, which made more time to spend enjoying the scenery and roads of each country.

Inaugural Vietnam Tour

What a fantastic ride!

We were a group of 6 motorcycles, riding through parts of northern Thailand, Laos and finally Vietnam. The roads were a mix of mostly rural two lanes with a variety of surfaces all paved.

This time of the year is spectacular, it’s just after the end of the green season, nature has beautiful colours, rice is being harvested, meaning most farmers are out on their rice fields with their buffalos. We started riding in the eastern direction towards Chiang Rai and Chiang Khong where we meet the Mekong River for the first time. Crossing the border into Laos and rode towards Oudom Xai.

Already during our third day of riding, we cross into Vietnam and visit the battleground at Dien Bien Phu.

Heading north towards the Chinese border and the Phan Xia Pang, 3143 meters, Vietnam's and South East Asia highest mountain. Rest day in the pleasant and picturesque resort town of Sapa before continuing to the rice terraces at Nghia Lo. Boat ride along with the Limestone caves at Ninh Binh. Enjoying riding on the Ho Chi Minh Trail to Phu Mat.

Once back in Laos we visit the Plain of Jars and continue to Luang Prabang, UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Crossing the mountains on yet another road less travelled to Pakbeng before returning to Thailand.

Riding fewer known mountains surrounding the province of Nan, which for centuries remained autonomous and cut off from the outside world. In every region during the tour, we feasted on local Thai/Lao/Vietnamese cuisine.

Scouting China (Yunnan & Tibet)

Route Overview: From Tropical Laos to Tibetan Heights

We kicked off in Chiang Mai, Thailand, crossed the northern border of Laos at Boten, and entered China—guided by our longtime partner, Jack, who ensured seamless permits and local expertise. What followed was a road trip like no other: riding from subtropical valleys to Himalayan peaks.

Highlights from the Ride

Yunnan's Lush Lowlands

The early legs took us through the patchwork of rice fields and tobacco farms, where life unfolds at a slower pace. These gentle sections served as the calm before the climb.

Tiger Leaping Gorge & the Himalayan Foothills

As the road followed the Yangtze River, we ascended into the dramatic Tiger Leaping Gorge , one of the deepest and most rugged canyons on Earth. This stretch required technical focus but delivered awe-inspiring views every kilometer.

Ancient Towns: Dali, Lijiang & Shaxi

These historic gems—each unique in architecture, culture, and rhythm—are living museums of Chinese history:

Dali: Lakeside serenity meets cobbled markets.
Lijiang: A labyrinth of canals and rooftops, home to the Naxi people.
Shaxi: A quiet stop on the old Tea Horse Road, filled with authentic charm.

Shangri-La to Deqin: Altitude Meets Attitude

Riding over 3,000 meters, we braved thin air, chilly mornings, and the surreal beauty of snow-dusted ranges and Buddhist stupas. For seasoned riders, this section is a rite of passage.

Scouting in Vietnam & Laos

Most tours exploring Northern Vietnam stay in the north-west part like Dien Bien Phu (famous for its battleground where the French finally “lost” Indochina), Sapa, (a charming mountain town) and Nghia Lo (famous for its rice terraces).

We decided to do something different and to ride roads less travelled. Our adventure in Vietnam started on the way to the market town of Bac Ha. Trusting Google Maps we “ended up” on a buffalo track across the mountains. A stretch of 40 km took us four hours to cover. Hence we learned it the hard way to better stay on roads which are marked on the physical maps…..

From Bac Ha, our adventure continued over the mountains along the border with China. Covering endless hill tribe villages, spectacular scenery and plenty of corners and twists. The ride to Ha Giang took a full day.

The next day, a scenic highlight of our journey was ahead of us. The road “snaking” over mountains and through villages and valleys. The scenery is truly not to describe. It feels like you want to stop every second km to take a photo. Especially the last stretch to Meo Vac was outstanding.

From Meo Vac, we continued on more curvy mountain roads to the Ba Be Lake. Another full day of riding and full of impressions and enjoyments. At the lake, we loaded the motorcycles on a boat and explored the lake for a couple of hours.

Compared to the rides we normally do in South East Asia, Northeast Vietnam is very different. The landscape is more dramatic, the area is less developed and the roads are less travelled. Hence not too many tourists make it to this part. The riding is technically more demanding, the accommodation is more basic and so is the food. All in all, this makes the experience rewarding, a journey of a lifetime.

10 Reasons for Riding in the Green Season in SE-Asia

1.) Clear and fresh

Most of the rain falls in the late afternoon and during the night time and the mornings are often clear. The fresh air is nice and makes riding even more pleasant.

2.) Nice temperature

The temperature during the day is ideal – it is not too hot when the sun is out and it is not too cold either. Short refreshing rain showers from time to time make the weather much more comfortable.

3.) The Road is yours

Even we prefer less travelled roads – in the green season the roads are literally yours and makes riding more joyful.

4.) Hassle free visits

It is not crowded. For restaurants and cafés you do not have to book a table in advance. Enjoy the quieter atmosphere. Most of the temples or other sights will be rather empty at this time of year.

5.) Green “Mother Nature”

The nature will completely change. The combination of sun and rain is perfect for wild flowers and other varieties of flora to grow. You will see green idyllic rice paddies, wonderful blooming plants and flowering trees everywhere.

6.) Great pictures

The green season often offers sharper views, fantastic cloud formations and spectacular sunsets with saturated colors. Great conditions to take brilliant pictures.

7.) Meet the locals

While people throughout Thailand are very friendly, we find that they are even friendlier during the green season! If the local Thai people are smiling, then you should smile too!

8.) Spectacular waterfalls and rivers

Don’t miss to visit the waterfalls and rivers at this time of the year. They are fuller and much more impressive!

9.) A great reason for a second visit!

Most first time visitors travel to Asia during the high season. But it will offer a different look and feel during the green season. It’s the perfect time to return and explore new areas…
