But before you twist the throttle and head for the border, it’s important to understand the logistics — for both you and your motorcycle.

Two Processes: You and Your Motorcycle
When crossing borders with your own bike, think of it as two separate processes:
1) You (Immigration)
Always check visa requirements before arriving at the border (Do not trust AI only, better to read from the government official websites). Depending on your passport, you may need:
- An e-visa (apply online before you go)
- Visa on arrival (available at many land crossings)
- Visa through the embassy (required for certain nationalities)

BTA Tip: Visa rules can vary by land vs air entry. Some remote border checkpoints don’t accept e-visas.
Your Motorcycle (Customs & Permits), regulations vary widely. In most Southeast Asian countries, the international TIR Carnet is not recognized. Instead, you may need a foreign vehicle permit. Requirements change often, so it’s crucial to check ahead of time.

We’re often asked about entry permits for Myanmar. Currently, due to the civil war, land border crossings into Myanmar are closed. Similarly, as of writing this, the Thailand–Cambodia border is closed.

Thailand to Laos & Cambodia
For solo riders or small groups, border entry is usually possible. Sometimes, local traffic police may request an informal “permit fee” in cash.
By law, third-party liability insurance is mandatory for foreign vehicles. Fortunately, this can usually be purchased directly at larger border checkpoints.
Entering China: Permits, Guides & Legal Requirements
Bringing your own motorcycle into China requires significant planning. A foreign vehicle permit is mandatory, and only a registered Chinese travel agent can apply on your behalf. By law, you’ll need:
- A licensed tour guide
- A support vehicle to accompany your ride
Because of these requirements, riding China solo is extremely expensive. The best option is to join a guided tour. Entering Vietnam: Permits & Guided Tours
Vietnam’s entry rules mirror China’s. You’ll need a foreign vehicle permit, arranged through a licensed Vietnamese travel agent. This also comes with the legal requirement of a tour guide and support vehicle.
