Asia Crossing Borders on a Motorcycle: Visas, Permits & Logistics Explained
Riding across borders in Southeast Asia is one of the most rewarding experiences for any motorcyclist. The landscapes shift, cultures blend, and every checkpoint marks the start of a new adventure. But before you twist the throttle and head for the border, it’s important to understand the logistics — for both you and your motorcycle.
At Bike Tour Asia, we’ve spent more than 11 years guiding riders through Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, Cambodia, and even into China. Here’s what you need to know before your next cross-border journey.
Two Processes: You and Your Motorcycle
When crossing borders with your own bike, think of it as two separate processes:
1) You (Immigration)
Always check visa requirements before arriving at the border (Do not trust AI only, better to read from the government official websites). Depending on your passport, you may need:
- An e-visa (apply online before you go)
- Visa on arrival (available at many land crossings)
- Visa through the embassy (required for certain nationalities)
To make it easier, here are the official visa portals for each country we ride through:
- 🇻🇳 Vietnam: evisa.xuatnhapcanh.gov.vn
- 🇹🇭 Thailand: thaievisa.go.th
- 🇱🇦 Laos: laoevisa.gov.la
- 🇰🇭 Cambodia: evisa.gov.kh
- 🇨🇳 China: Check with your local Chinese embassy or use a licensed travel agent like RideChina.com
BTA Tip: Visa rules can vary by land vs air entry. Some remote border checkpoints don’t accept e-visas.
Your Motorcycle (Customs & Permits), regulations vary widely. In most Southeast Asian countries, the international TIR Carnet is not recognized. Instead, you may need a foreign vehicle permit. Requirements change often, so it’s crucial to check ahead of time.

Common Rider Questions
We’re often asked about entry permits for Myanmar. Currently, due to the civil war, land border crossings into Myanmar are closed. Similarly, as of writing this, the Thailand–Cambodia border is closed.
BTA Tip: Always check the latest political and security situation before your ride. Reliable sources include government travel advisories and local operators.
Border Crossings: What to Expect
Thailand to Laos & Cambodia
For solo riders or small groups, border entry is usually possible. Sometimes, local traffic police may request an informal “permit fee” in cash.
By law, third-party liability insurance is mandatory for foreign vehicles. Fortunately, this can usually be purchased directly at larger border checkpoints.
Entering China: Permits, Guides & Legal Requirements
Bringing your own motorcycle into China requires significant planning. A foreign vehicle permit is mandatory, and only a registered Chinese travel agent can apply on your behalf. By law, you’ll need:
- A licensed tour guide
- A support vehicle to accompany your ride
Because of these requirements, riding China solo is extremely expensive. The best option is to join a guided tour. For example, Bike Tour Asia runs an epic 5,800 km journey from Chiang Mai to the Great Wall of China, consider joining a caravan tour. We proudly partner with Ride China, a trusted local operator we highly recommend.

Entering Vietnam: Permits & Guided Tours
Vietnam’s entry rules mirror China’s. You’ll need a foreign vehicle permit, arranged through a licensed Vietnamese travel agent. This also comes with the legal requirement of a tour guide and support vehicle.
Like China, going solo is prohibitively costly. A smarter (and more fun) option is to join an organized ride. Bike Tour Asia offers two unforgettable options:
- Timeless North Thailand, Laos & Vietnam Tour – A breathtaking ride through the mountains and culture-rich towns of the region.
- Four Corners of Southeast Asia Tour – Covering North to South Vietnam while weaving through Laos, Cambodia, and historic highlights across the region.
