Tour OVERVIEW

We have been overwhelmed by the interest in this ride! Departure dates now set for 2027

Tour is inclusive of Bike Tour Asia support vehicle and tour guide on own motorcycle.

The route travels through Thailand, Laos, China, Tibet, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan (including a ferry crossing over the Caspian Sea), Azerbaijan, Georgia, and Turkey before continuing to Bulgaria, Romania, Hungary, Croatia, Slovenia, Italy, Austria, and Germany.

The “big” adventure part of this ride is from Lhasa to Dushanbe, in total some 30 days and 7,000 km. The highlight the Tibetan Plateau and the "Pamir Highway", a very scenic road snaking its way through the Pamir mountains.

For China and Tibet, special permits are required, meaning we cannot travel independently and will therefore be accompanied by our Chinese partner. In Turkmenistan, we will travel on a tourist visa and permit, giving us the opportunity to explore more of this closed and mysterious country.

The major adventure section of the journey runs from Lhasa to Dushanbe, covering approximately 7,000 km over 30 days. The highlights of the ride are Tibet and the Pamir Highway, a spectacular scenic road winding through the Pamir Mountains.

The route does not require a Carnet de Passage.

Once in Europe, you have a great opportunity to continue and explore on your own the Alps, Italy, Austria, Switzerland, Germany and beyond.

Motorcycle, we recommend that you use a medium to large capacity dual purpose/adventure style motorcycle, e.g. BMW 900~1300GS, or similar. What is important is that you have a reliable and robust motorcycle that you are comfortable riding and has been fully serviced prior to the start and has new tires. Bike Tour Asia is offering 2nd hand BMW F900GS, BMW R1250 / 1300GS and Triumph Tiger 900 GT Pro models you can buy for the tour.

If you choose to bring your own motorcycle we will advise you how to arrange transport to Thailand and provide you with a Foreign Vehicle Permit allowing you to bringing in your motorcycle into Thailand.

After the tour, you are welcome to ship your motorcycle back to Thailand together with our support vehicle and other motorcycles. We will ship from port of Koper in Slovenia.

We will arrange motorcycle service and tire change in Osh / Kyrgyztan. This is a good location since we are half way through our journey and at the beginning of the Pamir Highway.

IMPORTANT NOTICE:

This is a long, physically, and psychologically demanding ride. To join you need to be in good shape. Some parts of the riding will be difficult. Some days will be long and hard for body, soul, and motorcycle, some short stretches of the road is mud and gravel.

A significant part of the itinerary is at high altitudes over 4,000m, where it is often cold. We do have a support vehicle that can carry our luggage and spare parts. The support vehicle driver is one of Bike Tour Asia’s experienced tour guides and has basic mechanical skills and can assist with basic repairs. Accommodation, in the Pamir highway (two nights) is basic. At all other locations accommodation is clean, comfortable and varies between 3-5 star hotels.

Laos Road Conditions;

Laos road conditions vary significantly: major routes in urban areas are often in good condition. Rural and mountainous areas have partly poor-quality roads with potholes, mud, and landslides. This is especially valid in Northern Laos. Traffic is partly chaotic and many trucks are over loaded. While riding motorcycle in Laos, slow down, “expect the unexpected”, be prepared to get dusty.

RIDING EXPERIENCES:

  • Familiar with rain and wind riding on gravel
  • Familiar with stony dirt roads and crossing waterways
  • Familiar with unpaved slopes
