Tour OVERVIEW

This scenic tour of Thailand offers great motorcycle riding & provides you with a great insight to the Lanna Kingdom – the “Kingdom of a Million Rice Fields”. The roads are mainly rural two lanes with a variety of surfaces and wind through areas of spectacular mountainous beauty.

From Chiang Mai (the “Rose of the North”) we warm up with the 'Samoeng Loop', a great way to start any ride! The first day we make our way to Thaton, at the Myanmar border. The itinerary takes you further to the tea plantations of Doi Mae Salong, the royal palace at Doi Tung, onto the Golden Triangle and the Mekong River where Thailand, Laos & Myanmar meet.

Another highlight is the ride up to Phu Chia Fa, this is a remote area with great roads, stunning scenery and hardly any traffic. We continue to the province of Nan, which for centuries remained autonomous and cut off from the outside world. Take a look at the unique village of Bo Kluea with its Salt Wells.

From Nan, we make our way back to Chiang Mai via another mountain range and the lakeside town of Phayo.

Day by Day Schedule

Day 1 / Chiang Mai-Thaton

Welcome to our Service Centre in the morning for a tour briefing and motorcycle hand over etc. We are at your disposal as of 8 am.

After only a few minutes on your scenic Thailand motorcycle tour, you have left Chiang Mai behind and follow the first amazing corners of the Samoeng Loop. Passing the Mae Sa Elephant Camp where you can stop to visit the amazing animals. From here make your way north first on back roads than on the main provincial road. Lunch by the limestone cliffs at Chiang Dao. You continue following the Thai – Myanmar border. There are a couple of scenic stops on the way. In the afternoon you reach Thaton, a small town on the banks of the Kok River, bordering with Myanmar. Enjoy a splendid view from Wat Thaton over the town and the vicinity. Continue to the nearby resort. Enjoy a cold drink and stretch your legs by the pool. Overnight at Thaton.

(230 km/143 miles).

Day 2 / Thaton-Chiang Khong

Leave Thaton and ascend to Doi Mae Salong on amazing twisty mountainous roads. Doi Mae Salong is a Chinese settlement which was built by a division of the Chinese Nationalist Army that refused to surrender to Chinese communists after the Nationalist Kuomintang government was routed in 1949.

Today the village still offers a native Chinese cuisine, lovely houses with flowers and countless tea plantations as far as the eyes can see. Proceed through farm villages along rice paddies and stop at the impressive Choui Fong Tea House. The tea house of this huge plantation serves all kind of different tea blends and great cakes. Enjoy the scenery!

Continue to the legendary Golden Triangle where the three borders of Thailand, Myanmar and Laos meet. Here you drive up to the Wat Sop Ruak temple to enjoy a great view over the Golden Triangle. In the small but interesting local Opium Museum, you can learn more about Khun Sa and the opium trade in the past. Before reaching Chiang Khong, stop at the View Coffee, an amazing spot overlooking the Mekong River. Overnight in Chiang Khong.

(220 km/137 miles).

Day 3 / Chiang Khong-Nan

Ride through some scenic mountain landscapes with plenty of twisties up to Phu Chi Fah. Phu Chi Fa is located on the border between Thailand and Laos. It’s a great ride up here - the scenery is spectacular with lots of photo opportunities. Since Phu Chi Fa is fairly remote, there are not many tourists who make it to this part of Thailand. If time permits and the weather clear, ride up to the viewpoint and walk to the cliff on the border to Laos. Continue to Phulangka and for the next hundred km or so ride through countless bends through yet more beautiful landscapes. Rejoin the main road and follow it to our final destination of the day which is the capital of Nan province and is also called Nan. For centuries Nan was a separate, autonomous Kingdom with few relationships to the outside world. Now, the city is a beautiful town with many well-preserved temples. Overnight in Nan.

(300 km/186 miles)

Day 4 / Nan-Bo Kluea-Nan

Without any doubt, the road to Bo Kluea offers some of the best ridings in all of Thailand, and an unmissable experience on your scenic Thailand motorcycle tour. Classic twisty roads with almost no traffic will make this day unforgettable riding experience. The tiny village of Bo Kluea is located in a scenic valley close to the Lao border - remote and picturesque. “Bo Kluea” means salt well as the village has raised around two natural saltwater wells which have been used for centuries. From here we cross over the mountain through Phu National Park. Enjoy the stunning scenery and empty roads. Once crossed the mountains take a break at a rather unique coffee place. In the early afternoon, you are back in Nan to visit the most beautiful temple, Wat Phumin. The temple was built as if it were on the back of two immense snakes. Take the opportunity and spend the evening at an authentic local restaurant on the bank of the Nan River. Overnight in Nan.

(200 km/124 miles).

Day 5 / Nan-Chiang Mai

Leaving Nan behind ride in a western direction for the last day of your scenic Thailand motorcycle tour. The first stretch is over a small mountain range. You will just love the way the road snakes its way over hills and through valleys. On your way to Phayao, you pass endless villages. In Phayao enjoy lunch by the lake. From here first follow the shore of the lake and then make your way towards the road leading to Mae Khachan and further to the nearby hot springs. Here you can dip your toes in the hot water. From here you have the last stretch to Chiang Mai and our Service Centre. Expect arrival by 5 pm, ending your scenic Thailand motorcycle tour.

(320 km/199 miles).
